The New Orleans Saints, founded 40 year ago, are a team in the National Football League. New Orleans, Louisiana is home to the Saints, and for more than 30 years they have played their home games in the Louisiana Superdome. Prior to the completion of the Superdome, the Saints played at Tulane Stadium.

In their first three years of play, the Saints were part of the Eastern Conference, jumping from the Capital Division, to the Century Division, then back again. The following year, the team joined the National Football Conference, playing in the NFC West for 21 years. Finally, five years ago, the Saints became part of the NFC Southern Division.

While they reign as the current champions of the NFC South, the Saints' tenure in the NFL has been somewhat less than "storybook" quality. The team has never won a League Championship. In fact, they have never even played for one. They have battled for the Conference Championship, but have never won it. The Saints have captured the division title only three times since they were founded.

After their founding, the Saints played 12 seasons before earning a .500 record, and it was eight years more before they managed to win more games than they lost. The Saints did not play consistently well until the late 1980s and early 1990s. That high point in their history was fairly short-lived, but they enjoyed a brief run of moderate success, making the playoffs four out of six times.

The Saints are owned by Tom Benson, a New Orleans native who currently lives in San Antonio, Texas. The Saints' head coach is Sean Payton. Payton held coaching positions with the Philadelphia Eagles, the New York Giants and the Dallas Cowboys before taking the top spot in New Orleans.

Perhaps the most exciting and pivotal season for the Saints came last year, when they returned to play in the Superdome following the devastation of New Orleans by hurricane Katrina the year before. The city rallied around the team – the whole country seemed to be rooting for them. The Saints made quick work of division rivals the Atlanta Falcons in the home opener, and they went on to win ten games in a season that was not short on thrills. Even though the postseason was cut short, the New Orleans Saints and the city they call home have something to look forward to next year.
