"A Moon for the Misbegotten" takes place on an old Connecticut farm. The farmhouse and the characters seem to be wrapped up in poverty both of spirit and means. The existence that the characters lead seems to be lacking at the beginning of the play.

The play opens with Josie sending her brother, Mike, off to make his way in the world. It is apparent that he is escaping from the negative atmosphere of the place. Josie is a strong character who refuses to be pushed around. She and her father, Hogan, are constantly harping on each other. Josie convinces her father that it is better for Mike to go off.

Tyrone, their landlord and friend, stops in for a visit. During this visit they learn that Tyrone has received an offer on the farm, and is considering it even though he promised to sell it to them. This sets in motion a scheme for Josie to entrap Tyrone in order to save the farm. Despite her rough edges it is apparent that Josie really does care for Tyrone, even though Tyrone is an alcoholic and womanizer. He seems tortured by something from his past.

When Tyrone returns to the farm later that evening, Josie begins her plan to ensnare Tyrone. However, Tyrone refuses to be brought in. It becomes clear that he truly cares for Josie and does not want to use or hurt her. He confesses his bad behavior shortly after his mother's death. Josie forgives him and gives him peace. He falls asleep and stays there through the night.

In the morning you can see a marked difference in his face. He is no longer as tormented by events from the past. He wishes Josie well and leaves the farm for good. Josie finds solace in the comfort she was able to provide for the man that she loved.

This story is one of redemption through love and friendship. Though both Josie and Tyrone would be considered depraved, they find that through helping each other hope and peace. The kindness and respect that they show for each shows that each person does have goodness in them.
