For over a decade, A Perfect Ganesh has replaced Western society's all-too-often ignorant ideas of third-world India with a stark, human portrayal of modern Hindu society. Terrence McNally's Pulitzer-nominated piece tells the story of two upper-crust wives who, abandoning yet another pampered Carribean vacation, opt to take a "spiritual pilgrimage" to the banks of the Ganges in search of a little Eastern healing.

The two protagonists, Margaret Civil and Katharine Brynne, bring the old "Odd Couple" Lemmon/Matthau partnership strongly to the mind of this journalist. Margaret, a meticulous stick-in-the-mud, and Katharine, a disorganized and outspoken personality, undertake a heart-rending journey into the heart of the Hindu world and religion in search of the titular "perfect Ganesh", a flawless statue of the god Ganesha. McNally displays an uncanny ability to manipulate the emotions of the audience using dialogue and music, as well as atmospheric effects, to produce a truly unique portrayal of today's India.

However, McNally's true skill lies in the ability to find humor and humanity within both the relationship of the protagonists and the culture of the impoverished and subjugated people he portrays. While some may find the presence of profanity and graphic depictions a little unsettling, this towering work is an intricately crafted monument to mankind's ability to adapt to almost inhuman suffering and, not only to survive, but to flourish and pursue the ever-present desire for happiness and spiritual peace.

Those casual theatre-goers seeking a "Thelma and Louise Do India" type experience need not apply; this is one play which requires a seat belt and a crash helmet. McNally's A Perfect Ganesh perfectly balances humor, conflict, and philosophical quandary into a beautiful and terrible experience."
