You will be amused. A Servant to Two Masters is playing near you. A Servant to Two Masters is a comedy by the Italian playwright Carlo Goldoni written in the 18th Century. The play offers a look at Italian life in the 1700’s. But more interesting it offers humor; it will entertain you. Most importantly, it offers some philosophical questions about our desire for more pay and why it is that we work and live. It allows us to look another’s quest and consider our own, but not too seriously.

“'Servant' does commedia proud”, wrote Damien Jaques, theater critic of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Jaques gave the play at Milwaukee Repertory Theater audience by Ernst and his colleagues a good review. Jaques continued that "Goldoni's plays have survived, but their American productions are neither frequent nor particularly proficient in the commedia style. Few American actors have the training to be authentic commedia performers.” Jaques also commented that “Gags, wisecracks, sly sexual references, acrobatics and elaborate costumes are important elements.” But be sure there is more than that.

The main character of the play is Truffaldino, a servant. In his quest to satisfy his desires he finds himself servant to two masters, which turns out to be both difficult and funny. However, even this is not enough, and he finds that he has indeed other desires and perhaps even another master—himself. But as in life, there are many other subplots and characters to the story. Nothing is as simple and easy as he hoped. However, unlike many of us in life, Truffaldino does fulfill his desire in the end.

There is more deception and enough action to keep the audience enthralled. A Servant to Two Masters is a play that will make for a great outing. Simply enjoy it on one level, but take the time to think about it and discuss it your with friends over a cup of coffee after the show.

Although the play has now closed at the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts, it is still being performed. Contact your favorite ticket outlet for show locations, dates, and times.
