Jumping. Spinning. Prancing.

There they go again. White flashes of fur and fun.

When you attend a Coton de Tulear specialty dog show, you never know what to expect from these clowns. A rare breed dog discovered in Madagascar thirty years ago, these happy characters wheedle their way into the hearts of dog lovers as well as cat lovers.

Specialty dog show events happen once a year in the United States. This year the big state of Texas held a specialty that attracted more than 40 Cotons. These bouncy 8-15 pound dogs with long white hair pranced around the show ring, strutted their dignity, and used pizzazz and swagger to greet ring-side enthusiasts.

Preparation for the show begins the day before the event. Owners groom and bathe the dogs—complete with luxury hair conditioners—and blow dry the hair. There are no mats or bald spaces. Often the bathing happens in the owner’s kitchen sink.

Owners and handlers combed and brushed the luxurious hair that is the hallmark of the breed. Long white hair, a perky tail carried over the back, and a muzzle with a furry moustache and a black nose lead the way for a Coton. They are animated. They are gregarious. They are natural entertainers. You can’t help but laugh at their natural antics.

When not in the ring earning ribbons and awards, spectator dogs sat in baby cribs and exercise pens. Some overflowed small grooming tables; others sat on their handlers’ laps and took in the admiration of passersby. During the day there are fun activities that show-off the clownish, playful personality of Cotons that did not compete in the dog show. Some of these happenings are dress parades where silly owners dress their dogs as knights, pirates, Barbie, or a ball of cotton candy. Handlers parade the dogs around the ring and judges award prizes the “most original”, “cutest”, and “most outlandish” costumes.

Agility races also earn recognition for playful Cotons. They chase each other, Frisbees, balls and retrieve in a flash . . . jumping hurdles and zigzagging weave poles.

By the end of the day, the owners are exhausted; the Cotons have given their all for fun and entertainment; and , everyone welcomes a quiet ride home and a soft bed awaiting them. Whew, what a day.
