Author Betty Smith vicariously reveals textures of her own life by divulging the tale of a young girl named Francie Nolan. Set in a poor Brooklyn New York apartment, specifically a neighborhood called Will)amsburg, Francie clutches to her idealistic notions in an unforgiving world of poverty. A family fit for the circus, Francie toils for survival alongside her mother Ka4ie, Father Johnny, and Brother Neeley. Katie is an onsite janitor for the family apartment building, while her husband Johnny is a singing waiter, mostly to pay for a never ending thirst for alcohol. Johnny is kicked out of the Union for his persistent drinking problem. A once proud Union member, Johnny is coveted without condition by his daughter Francie, while she struggles to maintain her relationship with her mother. The Nolan family is locked in the universal struggle t/ understand each other individually and within the family context. Likewise, the family is locked in the individual and collective struggle to free themselves from the bonds of poverty.
The book visits the past to reveal how the parents, Katie and Johnny, met and resolves in the future with the children, Neeley and Francie, engaging their own careers and relationships. Francie grapples with female and family equality when she is forced to leave school to work fulltime. Only so her male brother (her mother's favorite) can continue to go to school, despite her superior academic skill. Francie also wades in the vast waters of love with a War bound soldier who is already engaged to be married. Confronted by this soldier's wife, Francie moves on to eventually meet a former police officer seeking a government post. The story concludes by Francie reaching a feeling of family security.
