A Year with Frog and Toad is back yet again on its mission to delight and entertain. Inspired by the Frog and Toad series of Arnold Lobel, the musical was conceived by Mr. Lobel's daughter Adrianne. Willie Reale wrote the stage-version of the story as well as lyrics, and his brother Robert Reale gave music.
The script remains faithful to the book version in body and spirit, as it tracks the adventures of the two unlikely friends Frog and Toad. Frog is cheerful and relaxed while Toad is quite the grumpy, irritable fellow. Frog is lighthearted; Toad is a perpetual worrier. And yet the two are inseparable as they meander through the four seasons, flying kites, swimming, gardening and gorging on cookies Toad bakes at home. When Frog learns that Toad has never received a letter, he writes one for Toad and gets mutual pal Snail to deliver it the snail-mail way. The friends make sure to celebrate Christmas together. Frog and Toad is all about lots of heart- it shows what friendship is, and how each of us is special in our own unique way.
The narrative holds together a series of brief episodes- if one episode is about flying kites another episode revolves around the duo's dilemma with cookies. The episodes move fast, each given just enough time for a few laughs, one or two songs and a quick resolution. The costumes and settings are vibrant yet minimalist. Frog is presented as tall and greenish and Toad is shorter and brown. Each of the supporting cast does multiple roles as companions Frog and Toad find along the way. The jazzy music, with plenty of comedy thrown in for good measure, matches the upbeat mood. Lyrics are developed from the source.
All this leaves lots of room for audience imagination to play. Simplicity here is sophistication made to stand on its head. This is where this Tony-nominated show makes it mark. Here is a wonderful way to introduce young children to the world of musicals. Well, the show doesn't fail to entertain the dads and moms either- in fact A Year with Frog and Toad is for everyone who is young at heart.
