In 1988 Mark Lundholm probably didn't envision a future in live theater – he was living in a halfway house addicted to everything. You may be shocked to hear that at one time this funny man could have robbed you in a parking lot since at his lowest point, he was a homeless, suicidal drug addict. Lundholm holds back nothing about his past, revealing himself an addictive personality who “drank there, used that” and hit rock bottom before realizing one simple fact: it's all kind of funny. Not only the rehabilitation and not only the humiliating lows, but the entire life experience can be both harrowing and hilarious. Lundholm's perspective is brought brilliantly to life in his new play “Addicted: A Comedy Of Substance.”

In this one-man autobiographical show, Lundholm takes the audience along on his own personal and dysfunctional journey, involving themes of childhood, adolescence, addiction, parenthood and lastly, responsibility. When Lundholm tells his audience he was an addict, that is not a joke. In fact, he reveals himself to be a lifelong addict, whether flirting with danger in using crystal meth, cocaine and alcohol or lusting after the better things in life like sex, chocolate and the Internet.

Whether he knew it or not, Lundholm first started gathering material for his show in the late 80's when he recognized how insane his lifestyle had become. There in the halfway house (eat your heart out, Seinfeld!) he began to notice the humor in every miserable situation and began slowly but surely developing his introspective, comic mind. The show is brutally honest in detailing the funny man's tragic life from living with his alcoholic parents (the Disney vacation was cut short after his father picked a fight with one of Mickey's friends) to coping with his addiction as a husband and father. It took Lundholm many years and many personal disappointments to finally kick the habit, but at 48 years of age, he has now matured into a successful stand-up comic, having toured 49 states and five countries with three one-man shows including a Showtime comedy special. Even in the midst of all this professional excitement he still remembers his less-than-humble beginning, and makes a special effort to visit prisons and rehabilitation centers.

“Addicted: A Comedy Of Substance” is written and performed by the charismatic Mark Lundholm and directed by Bob Balaban, an actor and director you may recognize from “Gosford Park” and “Lady In The Water.” On MarkLundholm.com, Balaban expresses that it was Lundholm's dynamic personality that drew him to the project. “I’ve never heard anyone expose their life as a comedy routine like this, so honest and moving.”

Addicted: A Comedy Of Substance is a show “about overcoming obstacles”, as Balaban says, a story that naturally appeals to recovering addicts or addicts who want to change, but also to a much broader audience who will appreciate the show's outrageous humor and fearless honesty. Reviews of this 70-minute play have been positive with major publications as the The Chicago Sun-Times proclaiming that “Lundholm is an observant, clever writer and a terrific performer” and the Hollywood Reporter stating that “[Mark Lundholm] has an urgency and dark hilarity missing from most such theatrical endeavors.”

Personally, Lundholm is more at peace with himself than ever before, even in this theatrical setting. "I do so many kinds of shows that every one of the voices in my head has a place to play!" Maybe in 1988 this funny man never knew just how high he could go – but this true story certainly shows that positive thinking can be addictive.
