With over 1,850 performances to its Broadway credit, plus dozens of other major productions around the world, Elton John and Tim Rice's Aida is one of the most successful plays of all time. What few people realize, however, is how close Aida came to never being written as a Broadway musical at all.

When Disney bought the rights to Leontyne Price's beautifully-illustrated children's-book version of Giuseppe Verdi's original opera of Aida in 1990, their intent was to produce an animated feature film. However, as development progressed, more and more people within the Disney organization began to feel that Aida needed a life beyond that of animation.

Long-time screen writer Linda Wolverton was commissioned to begin the process of turning this more than 125-year-old classic opera into something more modern. Before the process was competed, playwrights Robert Fall and David Henry Hwang had added their magic to the book and as the crowning touch Elton John and Tim Rice, who had last collaborated on the hugely-successful LION KING, had written one of the most memorable scores in modern theatrical history, making Aida a virtual over-night sensation.

Aida was such a sensation after its Broadway debut in 2000 that it received 5 Tony Award nominations, winning in the categories of Best Original Music Score (Elton John), Best Actress in a Musical (Heather Headley), Best Lighting Design (Natasha Katz), and Best Scenic Design (Bob Crowley).

In 1999, just prior to the musical's Broadway opening on March 23rd of 2000, Elton John released what came to be known as the ?Concept Album, on which Elton and several well-known pop stars perform the music. Then, in 2000, 'Elton John and Tim Rice's Aida: Original Broadway Cast Recording' was released, featuring all twenty-one numbers from the show performed by the original Broadway cast.

Following its final Broadway performance, 1,852 performances plus 30 preview performances on September 5th, 2004, Aida has gone on to international acclaim with major productions of the musical being staged in Germany, The Netherlands, Japan, South Korea, and Switzerland, with additional productions scheduled to open soon in the Philippines, in Italy and in Uruguay.

Today Aida is being produced by dozens, if not hundreds, of local theatre groups and schools throughout the United States and the rest of the world who license the rights to the play from Music Theatre International.

Modern audiences may not be aware that Aida began as an opera, written by Giuseppe Verdi in 1871. It is the story of a Nubian princess who is captured and brought into Egypt as a slave. Immediately she captures the eye of one of Egypt?s military commanders, Radames, who then must choose between his love for Aida and his loyalty to his Pharaoh.

Although the original opera of Aida is still performed today and is considered one of the greatest operas ever written, it is Elton John and Tim Rice's musical version of this timeless masterpiece which has given it renewed life and made it accessible to millions upon millions of adoring fans worldwide.
