Tickets for George Lopez are going fast! Indicative of the melting pot that can be the American Dream in show business, George Lopez trod the same path comedians of other ethnicities to achieve mainstream success. Born in 1961 and raised in the San Fernando Valley in southern California, Lopez used his upbringing as a Mexican-American as fodder for his stand up comedy routine. Initially he built a considerable following the large Latino community in southern California, thanks in part to being a morning host on an L.A. radio station. However, most of his humour touched on universal themes of being poor, family squabbles and the battle of the sexes, so it was only a matter of time before his popularity spread throughout America, thanks to HBO Specials and his comedy albums, one of which was nominated for a Grammy, and sold out tickets for his shows.
George Lopez was a stand-up star when actress Sandra Bullock made him an offer he couldn't refuse: She wanted to help Lopez star in and produce his own situation comedy basically a Cosby show, only that it concerned Mexican-Americans and not African-Americans. ABC picked up Lopez' show in 2002 and even though the network bounced it around in different time slots, it still did well enough to become a solid part of ABC's prime time line-up. Lopez follows in the footsteps of Desi Arnaz, Freddie Prinze and Paul Rodriguez as Latinos who have starred in a hit TV sitcom.
He was also involved in a real life family drama. After marrying Anne Serrano in 1993 and having a daughter two years later, Lopez's health started to deteriorate to the point where he needed a kidney transplant to live. His wife donated one of her kidneys for transplant...and put a whole new spin on the term "community property."
Despite his family-appeal mainstream success, Lopez continues to do his stand-up routine, yet is not above ruffling feathers. He has called out fellow Latino comedian Carlos Mencia for stealing Lopez's material, and he lambasted Jay Leno for being a terrible interviewer. Obviously, a new kidney hasn't mellowed George Lopez one iota. Get your tickets for this wonderful stand up comedian before they're all sold out!
